Debt Is Satanic – What Are You Doing About It?

August 20, 2007

This past Sabbath, Pastor Scott spoke about why debt is damaging to Christians (look out for Episode #3 on August 26). He explained that debt:

  • Robs us of our true purpose.
  • Takes away our free time.
  • Makes us unhealthy.
  • Makes us a slave to the financial institutions.
  • Is satanic.

I am now debt-free as a result of prayer and alot of sacrifice. What were those sacrifices?

  • I now live by a budget, something I have never done in my life.
  • I moved back home to live my family to save money after 10-years of living on my own in downtown Toronto.
  • I also read alot of books to give me guidance on how the rich do it.
  • I never buy anything full price. I wait for sales
  • I no longer subscribe or buy magazines. I head to Chapters and read them off the newsstands or I visit the magazine’s website.
  • I eat out only once or twice a month. Watching the Food Channel has taught me how to make delicious meals from the comforts of home.
  • Most importantly, I create passive income that covers my basic expenses.

I could go on and on. What are you doing as a Christian to lessen your debt load? How are you saving money? What tips can you provide to others on how to live debt free. Leave your comment below.

i disagree that all debt is satanic in its origin. what i think is satanic are the reasons some of us become spiritually burdened by it, eg greed, want, jealousy etc. some debt is necessary and unavoidable. how many of us can afford to purchase a home without incurring debt, without a morgage? to save for such a purchase might take a life time if not forever for some of us. although paying cash for purchases decreases the risk of debt it leaves you with no credit history which is just as bad as having a bad credit report. try renting a car without a creditcard, it is impossible. if you have no self control over use of your credit card or other resources then a deeper look at what drives your desire to spend is needed. you cannot lead your family/church if you cannot even control your little fingers from pulling that platinum card out of you wallet. ask God to give you control over your finances and to manage the various resources he has given you.i will not be cutting up my credit card, giving up my mortaged home or taking the bus because God has blessed me and has allowed me to live WITH DEBT BUT NOT IN DEBT.GOD BLESS

    Mahi:

    Happy Sabbath!

Thanks for your kind remarks towards some of the things I was sharing this past Sabbath. You are right, we cannot afford to purchase a home without incurring some debt. You are right, should it be the other way around it would take a lifetime to get enough to pay cash for our homes!:-) You are right, incurring some necessary debt is good to building up credit, because without which lenders would not have a history on us to assist us.

When I suggested that debt is satanic I was merely saying that unnecessary debt is. Too many of us in our past have incurred it and can’t figure out how we got there. We do so because of greed, desire, etc. Some of the experiences I was sharing had to do with me when I was younger and was not trained, with wise counsel, to think in a financially sound manner. I have made choices that had I not made them, I would be in a different place financially. (And the chopping up of my credit card was used as an example of what some of us need to do to not have any more debt than we need to.) Today I am a better person because with God’s help I have taken the time to consider biblical principles, financial advice, etc. on what to do with God’s financial blessings he has entrusted to me.

Mahi, thanks for responding to my sermon. It means that you are considering what’s been said and that you are willing to share your experiences to build the body of Christ. Let’s chat more on the subject. Happy to engage you!

    Blessings,

    Pastor John

God has never intended for us to live the way we’re living. Yes, we’re to live debt free, but do we? Some people prosper with wealth or richness and some people dont. No, it’s not all or always satantic. Each day that is giving to us should be taken into consideration for us to live wisely and be more appreciative of what GOD has in store for us. But no, we want to continue blocking our blessings and adding more block blessing to prior blocked blessings that has piled up. Then we to cry to GOD asking “why hadnt I been blessed”. If we know that GOD has given us power to defeat all weakling, why do we cry over spilled milk? Getting back to the subject. We always have two choices to choose from YES or NO etc.. When you’re unsure of exactly what to do, you must immediately call upon the name of the LORD to help you make the right decision. We as true christians go to the extreme of living large knowing that: Firstly, there are people whose living from pay checks to pay checks. Secondly, they’re spending their pay checks up before its put into their hands. Lastly, we need to learn how to respect the power of GOD and the promises HE wants to fulfill for us. Bible scripture says, “lean not on your own understanding for GOD knows what we need and if we wait patiently we should be awarded.” There’s a big difference between NEED and WANT. Do you NEED GOD in your life? Yes you do. Because if you say I WANT GOD in my life then HE would become part-time and not full-time. Do you NEED a car? Yes you do. Do you NEED a house? No you do not, because you can either rent or stay with your parents. Do you NEED credit cards? No you do not, because the credit interest rate is higher in percentage and will take years to pay off than paying off what you’ve purchase. To alleviate a higher interest rate you could pay the balance off quicker if you triple your monthly payments to $50.00 to $100.00 as oppose to just paying $10.00 minimum a month which leads to incurring debt. I know they say you NEED a little credit to build up a good report on yourself. To be frank, I do not want any credit or credit cards weighing or dragging my name into the mud. I hope I have been of good encouragement to you and would ask you to keep a prayer upon your hearts and allow GOD to show up and show out in your life. Thanks for listening
